Dear Parents/Guardians:
Daily work is posted on our classroom Reminder Board and on this web-page. Class time is usually devoted to the starting and/or completion of learning tasks. Students should be recording all work and activities in the STUDENT AGENDA for your viewing. All work and activities should be recorded to provide you with an opportunity to discuss and question your child about their learning. While it is very important for students to be at school and in class on time, if a student happens to be absent, it is their responsibility to look at our Reminder Board, speak to others, and check our web-page to find out what activities or assignments they missed immediately upon their return.
Students should expect about one hour of homework per day for homeroom and rotary classes. Students are encouraged to add or improve previous work to ensure it meets expectations or exceeds them. A student should not be coming home and stating, "we don't have homework". There is always work to be done or improved - whether it's editing and revising work, selecting a piece to publish, organizing notes, or studying learned concepts and ideas for reinforcement and consolidation.
Encourage students to explain or teach their material to you and have them reflect on the concepts from their school activities to reinforce their learning. Have students make daily real-world connections to academic concepts in order to commit them to long-term learning. Students may also read aloud to you to encourage reading fluency and confidence. This is meaningful homework. Please ensure that your child knows that you are aware of this policy.
Also, we know that many of your children are involved in after-school activities, such as athletics, music lessons, religious and academic tutoring or language schools. Please take this into consideration when discussing homework with your child's teacher.
I would also like to request that parents do not send notes to school with their child asking them to be excused for not completing assignments. I can assure you that they have had ample class time to work and complete the tasks and any problems or extenuating circumstances should be communicated to me before an assignment or homework is due.
Thanks again for your support and concern. Best regards,
Mr. G. Grandbois
